Small House Society News – Oct 2024

Greetings,

Thanks for taking a moment to read this update. I hope you’re doing well. It’s been two years since the Oct 2022 Newsletter.

The Small House Society has always served as an advocacy initiative:

  • We continue to connect small home buyers with builders or vendors to meet their needs.
  • On social media, we share news about the movement and news of small house communities.
  • We engage with the media.
  • We give talks at community events.

Much of the work being done is quiet and behind the scenes: responding to emails, providing support by phone, and helping those with general questions about the movement.

There continues to be a need for this kind of service to the movement, and an ability to share insights from over 20 years of experience.

I was invited to give a talk at the home and studio of Grant Wood in Cedar Rapids. The topic was small houses. I enjoyed connecting with some people who are interested in the small house movement. The Grant Wood studio/home is maintained by the Cedar Rapids Museum. Below is a photo from the event on 29 Aug 2024.

Thanks for continuing to stay connected to our work.

Regards,

Greg Johnson

  1. If enough of you asked Harris to issue what I am calling The Housing Freedom Restoration Proclamation, then she might do it. It simply says, as long as a home is not a threat to anyone’s health or safety, then any restriction against that home is a misapplication of the police power and is therefore null and void. Free yourself from financial slavery. Harris says she wants to debate again but Trump says it is too late now. Perhaps she’d like to explain why she won’t issue The Housing Freedom Restoration Proclamation. She might say ‘because the American people don’t and won’t support it’. Well, the American people did not support the Emancipation Proclamation when Lincoln issued it. Just watch the PBS Ken Burns story entitled ‘The Civil War’. It is four DVD’s long. I bought a copy from PBS. Lincoln had the courage to issue it anyway. It took him a long time to do it, but he did it. I hope Harris understands and will find the courage and recognizes that we need to end the financial slavery caused by exclusionary zoning that shuns small, affordable homes.
You need to get your housing policy right. Throwing money at it won’t STOP THE HOUSING STEAL. Rent is theft. Interest is theft. Insurance is theft. And if you are forced to live in a big, expensive home then property taxes are theft. You need to double down on freedom. I agree, it is HER body and her choice. But what about her home? She should be able to live in any size home on any size lot anywhere in the US. It is her home, her money, her life, her choice and nobody else’s business. 43% of people who retire at 65 will run out of money. Restore our housing freedom so we can save more for retirement, retire sooner and live comfortably in retirement. This freedom would be priceless and NOT ADD ANYTHING TO THE DEFICIT. Freedom does NOT mean the freedom to take away someone else’s freedom. I watched Oprah’s special with Harris that was located in Farmington Hills, MI. I lived in Farmington Hills for 20 years, 18 of which were in a singlewide at Little Valley Estates. I sent a letter to Oprah in the past about restoring our housing freedom. She should’ve had me on the show and allowed me to ask Harris to issue the proclamation.
